services in their offices, it is important
that practice administrators and billing
staff are aware of these changes.
The rationale for this program
seems flawed. When the government
mandated adoption of EHR in physician practices, there were positive
incentives for conversion to electronic
systems. It would seem that a similar
program would be applied to encourage adoption of digital imaging
technologies, but this is not the case. If
Congress intends to incentivize physicians to switch to the newer technology, it should legislate financial incentives to encourage transition, rather
than punitive measures for failing to
upgrade to a newer technology.
NASS is working with other specialty societies, including AAOS, whose
members provide a high volume of
X-ray services, to advocate for reversal
of this law. Until this can be accomplished, it is important for all NASS
members to be aware of the law and its
consequences on reimbursement.
